INDUSTRY UPDATE: ENVIRONMENT BILL

The Environment Bill was re-discussed in the House of Lords on September the 6th 2021. This bill aims to ‘reduce waste and make better use of resources’.

The Environment Bill seeks to place requirements on councils to collect a consistent set of core materials from the curbside and create an extended producer responsibility for the disposal of packaging. In this further discussion of the bill, an additional amendment has been proposed to create mandatory targets for reducing plastic waste and single use products.

The Local Government Association (LGA) has asked for ‘urgent clarity’ regarding the timescale for the implementation of the proposed waste and recycling reforms.
